Viola Davis is General Nanisca in The Woman King. Sony Pictures released the first official trailer for the film on Wednesday, July 6, and Ms. Davis does not disappoint. Even in the 2.35-minute trailer, you can feel Davis transcend Nanisca's fierce, raw and powerful spirit, and is also in the best physical form she has ever been.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Old Guard), she co-wrote the screenplay with Dana Stevens and is a story by Maria Bello. It is produced by Cathy Schulman, Viola Davis, Julius Tennon, and Bello. Peter McAleese serves as an executive producer. Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and John Boyega star alongside Viola Davis.
Inspired by true events, The Woman King is the remarkable story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey Amazons in the 1800s with skills and fierceness, unlike anything the world has ever seen. Inspired by true events, The Woman King follows the emotionally epic journey of General Nanisca as she trains the next generation of recruits and readies them for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life.
The Woman King is scheduled to be released by Sony Pictures Entertainment on September 16, 2022.
