The New York Latino Film Festival (NYLFF) is set to return bigger and better than ever, running from September 15 to 22, 2024, to coincide with Latino Heritage Month. This year’s festival boasts a robust lineup of films from around the globe, highlighting the richness and diversity of Latino storytelling.
The 2024 festival opens with the world premiere of Clemente, a documentary exploring the life and legacy of baseball legend Roberto Clemente. Directed by David Altrogge and executive-produced by basketball icon LeBron James and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Richard Linklater, the film delves into Clemente's profound impact on future generations of Latino baseball players. This marks the first time NYLFF’s opening night will be held at Audible’s Minetta Lane Theatre, bringing a new layer of cultural depth to this much-anticipated event.
The festival will also showcase American Historia: The Untold History of Latinos, a PBS documentary co-created by award-winning filmmaker Ben DeJesus.
The three-part series uncovers lesser-known Latino stories across the Americas.
Among other highlights, Las Amazonas de Yaxunah, narrated by Oscar-nominated actress Yalitza Aparicio, takes viewers into the heart of the Yucatán region of Mexico, where a team of Mayan women shatters gender barriers through softball.
The festival’s wide-ranging genres include Your Monster, a quirky horror-comedy starring Melissa Barrera, and Pimpinero: Blood and Oil, a gripping Colombian thriller set in the dangerous world of gasoline smugglers.
NYLFF’s closing event promises a lively block party in Washington Heights, complete with food, live music, and festivities that will keep the community spirit alive.
“This festival has become a platform for showcasing the breadth and power of Latino voices,” said Calixto Chinchilla, founder of NYLFF. “Our goal is to connect audiences with stories that reflect our realities while creating opportunities for filmmakers to thrive.”
NYLFF will continue its commitment to fostering Latino talent with the return of the FUTURO Digital Conference, featuring tech leaders and content creators pushing the boundaries of Latino representation in media.
As Warner Bros. Discovery returns as the presenting sponsor, Dennis Williams, the company’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility, emphasized the importance of preserving and amplifying Latino culture. “WBD is honored to celebrate the Latino community and its vibrant creativity through the festival,” he said.
For film lovers, industry professionals, and community members alike, this year’s New York Latino Film Festival promises to be an unforgettable celebration of Latino heritage, cinema, and culture.
