Real Women Have Curves: The Musical Set to
Make Its Broadway Debut in 2025
Exciting news for theater lovers and fans of Real Women Have Curves! Producers Barry Weissler, Fran Weissler, and Jack Noseworthy have announced that Real Women Have Curves: The Musical will make its Broadway debut in 2025, following a critically acclaimed world premiere at the American Repertory Theater (A.R.T) at Harvard University in 2023.
This new musical is based on the beloved play by Josefina López and HBO’s Real Women Have Curves, with a screenplay by Josefina López and George LaVoo. The musical will feature original music and lyrics by Grammy Award-winning artist Joy Huerta of the Mexican pop duo Jesse & Joy, alongside composer/lyricist Benjamin Velez. The book will be penned by Lisa Loomer, with additional material from Nell Benjamin. The musical direction and choreography are in the hands of Tony and Olivier Award winner Sergio Trujillo, and music supervision will be provided by Nadia DiGiallonardo.
Set in the summer of 1987, in the heart of Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, Real Women Have Curves: The Musical tells the story of Ana, a young woman on the verge of adulthood. Ana dreams of leaving her immigrant family’s garment factory to pursue college and a career in New York City, but the expectations of her family tug her back home. Is it possible to chase your dreams while honoring your family’s sacrifices? This empowering new show, based on the original play, explores life's many twists and turns and the delicate balance of family and personal aspirations.
In reflecting on the musical, Joy Huerta shared her excitement: “I am thrilled to be a part of bringing Real Women Have Curves: The Musical to Broadway. Songwriting for theater is a new undertaking for me, and it’s been a thrill to collaborate with Sergio, Benjamin, Lisa, Nell, and the rest of this extremely talented team. Ana’s story is such a powerful and universal one that already holds so much cultural relevance, and we look forward to bringing it to new audiences in this musical format.”
While dates, cast, and additional creative team members will be announced later, fans won’t have to wait too long for a sneak peek. On Sunday, September 15, there will be an exclusive live performance of the musical’s title track, “Real Women Have Curves,” performed by Florencia Cuenca, Jennifer Sanchez, Elisa Galindez, and Aline Mayagoitia.
