As the world celebrates the 100th anniversary of James Baldwin’s birth, Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) presents Turkey Saved My Life - Baldwin in Istanbul, 1961–1971, a groundbreaking exhibition featuring rare photographs by renowned Turkish photographer Sedat Pakay. The exhibition opens on December 12, 2024, in the Grand Lobby of the Central Library, offering an intimate look at Baldwin’s transformative years in Istanbul.

Curated by Atesh M. Gundogdu as part of the BPL Presents series, this exhibition uncovers an often-overlooked chapter of Baldwin’s life. Between 1961 and 1971, Baldwin sought refuge in Istanbul, escaping the racism and homophobia he faced in the United States. It was during his time in Turkey that Baldwin found the space to write some of his most influential works, including The Fire Next Time and Another Country.

“Turkey Saved My Life provides a powerful window into Baldwin’s artistic and personal journey, illustrating how his years in Istanbul contributed to his unyielding commitment to civil rights and creative brilliance,” said Linda E. Johnson, BPL President and CEO. “Baldwin’s work continues to resonate globally, and we are proud to celebrate his legacy as an enduring voice for justice.”

Baldwin famously declared, “Turkey saved my life!” and Pakay’s never-before-seen photographs capture Baldwin’s time of personal and artistic renewal. Through these evocative images, visitors will witness Baldwin’s interactions with close friends, his reflections on Turkish society, and the moments of solitude that fueled his fearless writing.

Supported by the Mellon Foundation, this exhibition not only highlights Baldwin’s time in Turkey but also reinforces his lasting influence as a champion of resistance, liberation, and love.

In addition to the exhibition, BPL will host public programs such as panel discussions, film screenings, and readings, delving deeper into Baldwin’s enduring legacy and his unique connection to Turkey. Further details will be announced soon. For more information, visit the BPL website.
