Broadway's Wicked Welcomes Historic New Cast Members This Spring
The Land of Oz is about to welcome two exciting new stars to the Gershwin Theatre! Beginning Tuesday, March 4, the Broadway sensation Wicked will introduce audiences to its new leads: Lencia Kebede as Elphaba and Allie Trimm as Glinda.
This casting marks a historic moment for the long-running show. Kebede, a first-generation Ethiopian-American actress, is making her Wicked debut as Elphaba and will become the first Black actress to assume the role full-time in the Broadway production. She steps into the iconic emerald shoes after five years playing Angelica Schuyler in the National Tour of Hamilton, as well as roles in Rent and even singing backup for Beyoncé. Reflecting on her journey, Kebede said, "For the dreamers, the different, and the defiant—it’s our turn to fly."
Allie Trimm, who previously served as the Broadway standby for Glinda, will officially step into the role full-time. A Broadway veteran, Trimm made her debut in 13: The Musical and has since appeared in Bye Bye Birdie, Parade in Concert at Lincoln Center, and numerous regional productions. She is also known for her screen work, including roles in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Next Stop, Christmas.
The pair will take over from Mary Kate Morrissey (Elphaba) and Alexandra Socha (Glinda), whose final performances will be on Sunday, March 2. Additional casting announcements are expected in the coming weeks.
As the fourth-longest-running Broadway production, Wicked is a global phenomenon that continues to captivate audiences with its reimagining of the Wizard of Oz story. The musical explores the untold friendship between Elphaba, a misunderstood young woman with emerald-green skin, and Glinda, a bubbly blonde with a knack for popularity. With a score that includes the unforgettable hits “Defying Gravity,” “Popular,” and “For Good,” Wicked has become a defining work in musical theater.
Since its debut in 2003, Wicked has won over 100 international awards, including three Tony Awards and a Grammy. It has been performed in over 100 cities across 16 countries, translated into six languages, and seen by more than 70 million people worldwide. The show has also grossed over $6 billion globally, making it one of the most successful musicals of all time.
The Broadway production continues to thrill audiences at the Gershwin Theatre, while the blockbuster film adaptation, which premiered in November 2024, has become the highest-grossing film based on a Broadway musical in history.
