Waiting for Godot
Jamie Lloyd’s new production of Beckett’s iconic masterpiece opens September 28 at the Hudson Theatre
Acclaimed actor Michael Patrick Thornton will return to Broadway this fall in director Jamie Lloyd’s highly anticipated production of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, starring Keanu Reeves as Estragon and Alex Winter as Vladimir. Thornton will take on the pivotal role of Lucky in the strictly limited run at the Hudson Theatre, beginning September 13, with opening night set for September 28.
Thornton previously collaborated with Lloyd in the Tony-nominated 2023 revival of A Doll’s House opposite Jessica Chastain, earning the prestigious Callaway Award for his performance as Dr. Rank. His casting in Godot brings together one of the most celebrated stage talents in Chicago with a creative team known for bold, visionary productions.
Waiting for Godot, widely considered one of the greatest plays of the 20th century, continues to resonate across generations. Since its 1953 premiere, Beckett’s existential masterpiece has influenced creators across theater, film, music, and visual art. The play’s unique blend of absurdist comedy and profound philosophical depth has secured its status as a cultural cornerstone.
A Celebrated Cast and Visionary Director
This new Broadway production marks the first time Reeves and Winter, longtime collaborators best known for the Bill & Ted films, will share a stage on Broadway. Under Jamie Lloyd’s direction, the production promises to offer a fresh take on Beckett’s celebrated work. Lloyd, known for his stripped-down, psychologically driven interpretations of classic texts, brings a contemporary edge to this enduring play.
Michael Patrick Thornton adds a compelling layer to the cast. A pillar of Chicago’s theater scene and co-founder of The Gift Theatre, Thornton has received critical acclaim for roles both on stage and screen. He made his Broadway debut in Macbeth alongside Daniel Craig and Ruth Negga and is known for his television work in Private Practice, The Good Doctor, and 61st Street.
