Interview: Ryan Coogler on Sinners, Cultural Truths, and Shooting the First IMAX Film in Two Aspect Ratios
By Venus D. Thomas
My interview with Ryan Coogler was a film nerd’s dream come true.
From discovering the spark that inspired him to write Sinners to learning how he maintained cultural authenticity while honoring African, Chinese, and Irish traditions woven into the story—Coogler opened up with the ease of someone who knows exactly what he’s doing and why he’s doing it.
Set in the 1930s American South, Sinners follows twin brothers who return home to start over—only to find that something darker, older, and far more dangerous awaits them. The supernatural horror-drama stars Jayme Lawson, Jack O’Connell, and Miles Caton will be released nationwide by Warner Bros. Pictures on April 18, 2025.
Coogler also revealed a groundbreaking detail: Sinners is the first IMAX film ever shot in two aspect ratios—a visual achievement that matches the story’s scale and ambition.
And then came a full-circle moment I’ll never forget—he told me that he and his family were fans of my Nickelodeon show Salute Your Shorts. He even taught his kids the theme song. That moment said it all: Ryan Coogler is a generational talent, effortlessly cool, and deeply grounded.
This is more than a horror film. Sinners is a cultural reckoning—and Coogler is the right storyteller to lead the way.
