Jordan Donica to Join ‘Sunset Blvd.’ on Broadway as Max Von Mayerling

Jordan Donica, the Tony-nominated baritone best known for his performance as Lancelot in Camelot, will return to Broadway next month in Jamie Lloyd’s revival of Sunset Blvd. The production, currently running at the St. James Theatre, has been nominated for seven Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical.

Donica will assume the role of Max Von Mayerling beginning Tuesday, June 10, taking over from Olivier Award winner David Thaxton, who will give his final performance on Sunday, June 8. Thaxton originated the role in this revival's West End production in 2023 and received an Olivier nomination for his portrayal.

The revival of Sunset Blvd.—Andrew Lloyd Webber’s adaptation of the 1950 film noir classic directed by Billy Wilder—opened on Broadway in October to widespread critical acclaim. Lloyd’s stripped-down staging has drawn praise for its bold aesthetic and emotional intensity. The Chicago Tribune called it “a brilliant, red-hot revival of Lloyd Webber’s best score,” while New York Magazine described it as “a solar flare that dazzles.”

Donica’s casting adds further distinction to the revival’s already celebrated ensemble. In addition to his turn in Camelot, his Broadway credits include My Fair Lady, The Phantom of the Opera, and Into the Woods at New York City Center. Regionally, he has performed in productions of Hamilton, Les Misérables, Jesus Christ Superstar, and South Pacific, and he appears in the upcoming third season of HBO Max’s The Gilded Age.

Sunset Blvd. stars Nicole Scherzinger as Norma Desmond, with Tom Francis as Joe Gillis and Grace Hodgett Young as Betty Schaefer. The production’s creative team includes Soutra Gilmour (set and costume design), Fabian Aloise (choreography), and Alan Williams (music supervision), with lighting by Jack Knowles and sound design by Adam Fisher, both nominated for 2025 Tony Awards.
