Composer Michael Abels co-founder of COMPOSERS DIVERSITY COLLECTIVE, real diversity in Hollywood

Composer Michael Abels is best-known for his scores for the Oscar-winning film GET OUT, and for Jordan Peele’s US. Abels also the co-founder of the COMPOSERS DIVERSITY COLLECTIVE. This is a tremendous discovery because Abels understood the need for composers of color to be able to network in Hollywood. It’s not an easy place to navigate, Hollywood is a closed place despite all their posturing about diversity and inclusion.   I can thank composer Matthew Wang for connecting me to this wonderfully gifted man and letting me know about Composers Diversity Collective.   While reading the November issue of Forbes, I discovered a new social media app called LUNCH CLUB. It’s an AI super-connector that makes introductions for 1:1 video meetings to advance your career. During one of the first LunchClub meetings, I met Wang who provided me the 411 on the Composers Diversity Collective. You may not know Abels by name or face but I wager that you’ve heard his work because he’s best known for his scores for the Oscar-winning film GET OUT, and for Jordan Peele’s US, for which Abels won the World Soundtrack Award, the Jerry Goldsmith Award, a Critics Choice nomination, an Image Award nomination, and multiple critics awards. The hip-hop-influenced score for US was short-listed for the Oscar and was even named “Score of the Decade” by online publication The Wrap.
