Inside the 97th Academy Awards: Themes, Surprises, and Conan O'Brien's Big Night
As the 97th Academy Awards approaches, the Academy held a press conference to give a behind-the-scenes look at what audiences can expect from this year’s show. Hosted by Jacqueline Coley, Awards Editor for Rotten Tomatoes, the panel featured key members of the Oscars production team, including Raj Kapoor (Executive Producer and Showrunner), Katy Mullan (Executive Producer), Mandy Moore (Supervising Choreographer), Alana Billingsley (Production Designer), Michael Bearden (Music Director), Jon Macks (Writer), Mike Sweeney (Producer and Writer), and, of course, this year’s host, Conan O’Brien.
A Celebration of Los Angeles and Connection
According to Raj Kapoor, this year’s Oscars will honor the City of Los Angeles, recognizing both its cinematic legacy and the resilience of its people.
“We wanted to create beautiful moments on stage that celebrate this amazing city and the films that were filmed here,” Kapoor said. “There will be a charitable component for viewers who want to contribute.”
Executive Producer Katy Mullan emphasized the theme of “celebration of connection.”
“These movies are made by so many talented people across different departments,” Mullan explained. “We wanted to pull back the curtain and showcase the behind-the-scenes stories alongside the celebration of what happens in front of the camera.”
Conan O’Brien Takes the Stage
For the first time, Conan O’Brien will step into the role of Oscars host. When asked why he was chosen, O’Brien quipped:
“You’re supposing that I’m the perfect person—we don’t know.”
Kapoor reassured the press that the decision to bring O’Brien on board was an easy one.
“Conan brings humor, warmth, and sincerity. From our first meeting, it felt like a warm hug. We knew we were in good hands.”
O’Brien, in his signature self-deprecating style, responded:
“Let’s see what you’re saying on Monday.”
Behind the Scenes: Music, Choreography, and Production
Music Director Michael Bearden, a veteran of many high-profile performances, spoke about his approach to the show’s sound.
“The intention is joy, love, and inspiration. If we feel it, the audience will too.”
Supervising Choreographer Mandy Moore promised a mix of energy and excitement.
“We’re doing everything this year—joy, celebration. It’s an honor to work with Michael and this team.”
Production Designer Alana Billingsley teased an immersive set.
“We wanted to wrap the room with the set, so everyone feels emotionally connected. The orchestra is at the heart of the show—we want them to be part of the experience.”
The Oscars’ Iconic Moments and Special Tributes
Kapoor confirmed that there will be surprise appearances and performances, including a tribute to Quincy Jones, this year’s recipient of the Governor’s Award.
“Queen Latifah will be part of that performance,” Kapoor revealed. “It’s a beautiful moment that will uplift the room.”
When asked about iconic Oscars moments, O’Brien teased:
“I’m working on things that will pop visually and be fun. I love jokes, but it’s more than that. We’re aiming for different tones and textures.”
The Q&A Session
Q: Have you reached out to past hosts for advice?
Conan O’Brien: “I spoke to Billy Crystal, who I think is the all-time great. Jimmy Kimmel and his wife, Molly, reached out as well. They were incredibly supportive—though Jimmy did stick me with the bill at an expensive restaurant.”
Q: What’s the approach to balancing serious moments with humor?
Mike Sweeney: “That’s always a work in progress. We’ll strike the right tone between serious and lighthearted.”
Jon Macks: “A great show is like a great film—it’s a collaboration. Conan sets the tone, and we work with presenters to make sure the material fits the moment.”
Q: How will the Oscars celebrate diversity and representation?
Katy Mullan: “The nominees this year are incredibly diverse, and that will be reflected in the show. Cynthia Erivo has had an amazing year, and we have something special planned to honor that.”
Q: Can you give us a hint about the ‘Wicked’ performance?
Raj Kapoor: “We can’t say too much, but Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s performance will be one of the highlights of the night.”
Q: Is anyone in the audience a target for Conan’s monologue?
Conan O’Brien: “I think Ron Howard and Tom Hanks have had it too easy for too long. I’ll be taking down only the most beloved people in Hollywood.”
Final Thoughts
With just days to go until the 97th Academy Awards, the excitement is palpable. The themes of connection and community will guide the evening, while O’Brien’s humor is sure to bring a fresh energy to the stage.
