The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is not just celebrating cinematic excellence at the 97th Oscars®—it is also taking a bold step toward environmental responsibility. With a commitment to sustainability across its programs, buildings, and initiatives, the Academy is implementing forward-thinking practices designed to reduce its carbon footprint and move toward carbon neutrality.
From eco-conscious fashion partnerships to waste reduction at Hollywood’s most prestigious events, the Academy is leading the way in sustainability. These collective efforts focus on emissions accountability, waste diversion, and piloting new technologies to create a lasting impact.
Sustainable Initiatives at the 97th Oscars®
Carbon Footprint Assessment – The Academy continues to refine its sustainability practices using data from Three Squares Inc., analyzing the impact of the 2024 event.
Sustainable Style – In partnership with Black Pearl, guests and staff are educated on eco-friendly fashion choices, with all attendees receiving the Academy’s Sustainability Style Guide.
Upcycling in Fashion – Rent The Runway is providing staff with resources to upcycle and extend the life cycle of garments.
Transportation Solutions – Attendees are encouraged to carpool and utilize rideshare options to reduce emissions.
Eliminating Single-Use Plastics – Plastic water bottles are replaced with refill stations and canned water alternatives.
Digital Ticketing – To cut down on paper waste, all Oscar event tickets, parking passes, and event details are distributed digitally.
Eco-Friendly Partnerships – Vendors, suppliers, and partners are carefully selected based on their commitment to sustainability.
Green Practices at the Oscars® Governors Ball
Catering:
More than 50% of the menu is plant-based or vegetarian, a tradition since 2013.
Ingredients are responsibly sourced, sustainably farmed, or selected based on the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch recommendations.
All surplus food is donated to Chefs to End Hunger to support food-insecure communities.
Energy Efficiency:
LED lighting and battery-operated LED candles illuminate the event, reducing energy consumption.
Waste Diversion:
Event materials, from lighting and furniture to audio and rigging equipment, are rented or repurposed.
Rechargeable batteries are used in headsets and microphone transmitters to reduce electronic waste.
Plastic, metal, glass, paper, and cardboard are sorted and recycled.
Food scraps that aren’t donated are composted.
Floral arrangements are designed in reusable vases with biodegradable floral foam, and fresh flowers are composted or donated to shelters and hospitals.
70% of fabrication materials are reused, recycled, or composted, with hardware and plywood repurposed in subflooring.
As the Academy continues to champion sustainability, its commitment extends beyond the Oscars season—setting a precedent for responsible event management in Hollywood and beyond.
