Julio Reyes Copello to Produce Broadway Cast Album for “Real Women Have Curves: The Musical”
Ghostlight Records to release the album in June
Ghostlight Records has announced that 15-time Grammy and Latin Grammy Award-winning producer Julio Reyes Copello will produce the Original Broadway Cast Recording for Real Women Have Curves: The Musical. The highly anticipated album is set for release this June, capturing the spirit and sound of the show currently playing at Broadway’s Belasco Theatre.
Reyes Copello, whose work spans across genres and global icons—from Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony to Ricky Martin and Brian May—brings decades of experience and artistry to the project. Known for his orchestral sophistication and chart-topping productions, Reyes Copello’s involvement marks a major milestone for this new musical rooted in empowerment, family, and community.
Directed and choreographed by Tony and Olivier Award-winner Sergio Trujillo, Real Women Have Curves: The Musical features an original score by Grammy Award-winning artist Joy Huerta (of Jesse & Joy) and Benjamin Velez, with a book by Lisa Loomer and Nell Benjamin. The musical made its Broadway debut at the Belasco Theatre following previews that began on April 1. Opening night is set for April 27.
Before the full cast album arrives, fans can enjoy a preview via the newly released EP, Makin’ it Work with Joy.
The four-track release, featuring Huerta and cast members including Katya Diaz and Aline Mayagoitia, offers a taste of the show’s vibrant Latin-pop score. Tracks like “Daydream” and the title anthem “Real Women Have Curves” are already resonating with audiences. The EP is available for streaming https://rwhc.lnk.to/Joy
A Musical with Heart—and Grit
Set in East Los Angeles, Real Women Have Curves follows Ana Garcia, an ambitious high school senior torn between her own dreams and the demands of her family’s dressmaking business. As Ana helps her mother and a group of working-class women complete a massive order of dresses, she begins to redefine what beauty, success, and identity truly mean.
Adapted from Josefina López’s acclaimed stage play (which also inspired the 2002 HBO film), this new musical has been praised for its humor, emotional depth, and cultural specificity. The Boston Globe called it “a winner, with a big heart and joyous abandon,” while WBUR hailed it for its message of liberation and strength.
A Powerhouse Team Behind the Music
Julio Reyes Copello’s resume reads like a who’s who of contemporary music. With over 58 Grammy nominations and a reputation for seamlessly blending classical orchestration with modern pop and Latin music, his influence spans global projects including Koati (with Sofía Vergara), the VR experience Mars 2030 (with NASA), and the El Zorro series soundtrack. A leading music educator, Reyes Copello also founded the Art House Academy and introduced the first Abbey Road Institute in the United States.
