BROADWAY'S DARK COMEDY DARLING, DEATH BECOMES HER, SPARKS A CITYWIDE ART EXPLOSION
With ten Tony nominations and a wave of critical praise calling it everything from “savagely funny” (Time Out New York) to “a perfect musical comedy” (Deadline), Death Becomes Her isn’t just Broadway’s must-see hit—it’s a full-blown cultural moment. Now, the ghoulishly glamorous production is partnering with some of New York’s most dynamic visual artists for a new creative collaboration, “Artists on Artists,” adding another thrilling layer to its theatrical reign.
Produced by Universal Theatrical Group, Death Becomes Her has transformed the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre into a laugh-filled house of horrors, fueled by Tony nominees Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard, who lead an electrifying cast through a wickedly funny story of vanity, vengeance, and a mysterious elixir that promises eternal youth. But the magic isn’t stopping at curtain call.
In this new “Artists on Artists” series, five acclaimed NYC-based artists—Gail Anderson, Jade Purple Brown, Marcos Chin, Quentin Jones, and Jessica Walsh—were invited to experience the musical firsthand, followed by behind-the-scenes conversations with cast and creatives. From these encounters, each artist created original work inspired by the show's outlandish spirit and macabre style.
The resulting pieces will be unveiled Monday, May 12, both online and prominently on a massive billboard at 51st Street and 7th Avenue in the heart of the Theater District—offering New Yorkers a new way to experience the show’s aesthetic from the sidewalk up.
Pairings that Sparked the Series:
-
Quentin Jones teamed up with Director/Choreographer Christopher Gattelli,
-
Gail Anderson met with the writing team of Julia Mattison, Noel Carey, and Marco Pennette,
-
Jade Purple Brown connected with cast members Megan Hilty, Jennifer Simard, Christopher Sieber, and Michelle Williams,
-
Marcos Chin collaborated with Sound Designer Peter Hylenski and Orchestrator Doug Besterman,
-
Jessica Walsh worked alongside the show’s award-winning design team: Derek McLane (sets), Paul Tazewell (costumes), and Justin Townsend (lighting).
The series explores how theatrical storytelling and visual art can intersect to create something entirely new. “This is what art is supposed to do—push you, delight you, and make you think,” said Anderson, Chair of Design at the School of Visual Arts. “Death Becomes Her gave us that spark.”
The Broadway production itself has been called “a life force of a musical,” with Deadline raving that it “grabs the audience by the jugular fast and doesn’t let go.” A cast stacked with talent—Hilty and Simard lead as Madeline Ashton and Helen Sharp, alongside Christopher Sieber as Ernest Menville and Grammy winner Michelle Williams as the enigmatic Violet Van Horn—delivers punchlines and powerhouse vocals with precision.
With stunning visual effects, jaw-dropping design, and a book by Marco Pennette, direction and choreography by Christopher Gattelli, and an original score by Julia Mattison and Noel Carey, Death Becomes Her is redefining what a Broadway comedy can be.
It is also the most nominated musical of the year, racking up 33 award nominations across the Tonys, Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk, and more.
