Lana Gordon to Return as Persephone in Broadway's Hadestown

Lana Gordon is headed back to the underworld.

The producers of Hadestown—Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold, and Tom Kirdahy—announced today that Gordon will reprise her role as Persephone in the Tony Award-winning Best Musical, beginning Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the Walter Kerr Theatre. She succeeds original Broadway cast member Merle Dandridge, who will play her final performance on Sunday, June 1.

A longtime favorite of Broadway and international audiences alike, Gordon earned praise for her performance as Persephone during the show's first national tour. She brings a dynamic presence and powerhouse vocals to the role of the underworld’s vibrant queen.

Hadestown is now in its sixth hit year on Broadway and recently wrapped a record-breaking three-year North American tour. The musical has also returned to London’s West End and will debut in Sydney, Melbourne, and Amsterdam this spring.

Currently onstage with Dandridge are Daniel Breaker as Hermes, Phillip Boykin as Hades, Myra Malloy as Eurydice, and Ali Louis Bourzgui as Orpheus. The Fates are played by Marla Louissaint, Jessie Shelton, and Kay Trinidad, with the ensemble featuring Emily Afton, Malcolm Armwood, Timothy H. Lee, Sydney Parra, and Alex Puette. Swings include Brandon Cameron, KC Dela Cruz, Alex Lugo, Max Kumangai, and Tanner Ray Wilson.

Created by singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and director Rachel Chavkin, Hadestown began as a small indie project in Vermont before evolving into an acclaimed concept album. Today, it's a genre-defying musical blending American folk, jazz, and poetry to retell the ancient myths of Orpheus and Eurydice, and Hades and Persephone.

The show has captivated audiences with its hypnotic score and richly imagined staging, delivering a timely message about hope, love, and resilience in the face of darkness.

Gordon’s Broadway roots run deep. She began as a dancer with Alvin Ailey and Donald Byrd before joining the original cast of The Lion King. She went on to star as Velma Kelly in Chicago the Musical on Broadway and abroad, and has appeared in Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair, and West Side Story.

“I’m thrilled to return to Hadestown,” said Gordon. “This role and this show are magic.”
