‘Romy & Michele: The Musical’ to Begin Off-Broadway Run at Stage 42 This Fall
Romy & Michele: The Musical, a new stage adaptation of the cult-favorite 1997 comedy Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, will begin performances Off-Broadway on October 14 at Stage 42, with an official opening night set for Tuesday, October 28. Tickets are now on sale at Telecharge.com.
The musical reunites the film’s original screenwriter, Robin Schiff, who has written the book for the stage production. The score features music and lyrics by Gwendolyn Sanford and Brandon Jay, best known for their work on Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black. Direction is by Kristin Hanggi (Rock of Ages), with orchestrations by Keith Harrison Dworkin (Emojiland).
The production is being mounted by Barry Kemp, Stephen Soucy, Peter Schneider, and Laurence Mark, with Showtown Productions serving as executive producer. Casting and additional creative team members will be announced at a later date.
Set a decade after high school, Romy & Michele follows two inseparable best friends who set out to impress former classmates at their ten-year reunion. Romy is reluctant to go, but Michele sees the occasion as a chance to shine—and the pair concoct an outlandish plan to reintroduce themselves with exaggerated flair. Infused with a pop-heavy score inspired by the music of the 1980s and ’90s, the musical aims to recapture the irreverent charm and playful spirit that made the film a sleeper hit.
The original movie, directed by David Mirkin and starring Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino, became a cultural touchstone for its offbeat humor, fashion-forward nostalgia, and sincere celebration of female friendship.
