"Extinguished Lives" Award-winning director Roberta Grossman’s riveting new documentary short, "Extinguished Lives," will have its New York premiere at DOC NYC. When a young bride and her husband attempt to flee the Nazi invasion for the safety of her childhood home—a remote Jewish village in Lithuania—they quickly realize the most chilling threat may come not from the soldiers marching in, but from the neighbors they once relied on for friendship and community. DOC NYC and The Lost Shtetl Museum will present the world premiere of "Extinguished Lives," a hybrid documentary short that brings light to a little-known chapter of history: the Holocaust by bullets. Through survivor testimony, the film explores the murder of Lithuanian Jews not only by Nazi occupiers but also by local collaborators in the forests surrounding hundreds of shtetls. At its heart is the story of a young woman, forced to choose between staying with her family or trying to save herself—an impossible decision in an era marked by betrayal and brutality. After the screening, audiences are invited to join a timely panel discussion moderated by DOC NYC Executive Director Raphaela Neihausen. The conversation will tackle the meaning and necessity of Holocaust films in 2025, featuring director Roberta Grossman, Dr. Jolanta Mickute (Director of Education, The Lost Shtetl Museum), filmmaker Denis Dobrovna ("The Consequences of Truth"), and exhibit designer Büke Kumyol (RAA). "Extinguished Lives" screens on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at 12:00 PM at the IFC Center, 323 6th Avenue, New York, NY 10014. Get your Tickets now. |
