Venus DeMilo Thomas and the 44th Annual Association of Black Women Physicians

Venus DeMilo Thomas attended the 44th Annual Association of Black Women Physicians, an inspiring event honoring outstanding trailblazers in medicine and education who exemplify the spirit of service, leadership, and resilience.

Scholarship recipients of the ABWP Rebecca Lee Crumpler, MD Scholarship shared their health tips for African American women. I spoke with Tyra Lacy, a student at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, who emphasized mental health, saying, “Make sure you are taking care of yourself.” Kendall K. Reed added, “When you see it, you can achieve it.”

Maya Curri described Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler as the first African American woman physician in the United States, encouraging women to care for themselves and remember they don’t have to do it alone. I also spoke with pre-med student Correen Cox, who will be applying to medical school next year. Tamia Williams is developing an immunology board game designed to support learners from all educational backgrounds.

Monika Watat, a medical student, believes that going outside and spending time in the sun can promote better health outcomes. Damola Adeyamo, a third-year medical student at UC Riverside, urged us to keep up with mammograms.

Dr. Pamela J. Simms-Mackey was honored with the Visionary Award, presented by Dr. Malaika Graves, membership committee chairperson. Dr. Jessie Sherrod, founder of the Association of Black Women Physicians, continues to inspire generations of women in medicine.

Dr. Gail Wyatt received the Humanitarian Award and reminded us to “Find ways of soothing ourselves.” Dr. Joy Williams, OBGYN, urged us to “Keep it moving, baby,” noting that exercise is essential for longevity.

Dr. Latanya Hines, benefits scholarship chairperson, highlighted the enduring legacy these students bring to ensuring excellence in care. Lilly Jamoh added a powerful reminder not to let anyone make you feel dramatic and to take charge of your own healthcare.

To be in the presence of such brilliance and purpose-driven excellence was truly an honor.
