Reporter Venus DeMilo Thomas sat down with the creator of "Walk In The Light," the Oscar-qualified, NAACP Image Award–nominated animated short that revisits the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing through a perspective rarely seen on screen.
Written and directed by Arkansas native Princella Smith, "Walk In The Light" reframes the tragedy through the experience of Raymond Washburn, a blind survivor who recounts the day to his eight-year-old granddaughter, Aiyana. What emerges is a layered family narrative that highlights Native American strength, storytelling, and cultural endurance.
The film has already drawn international acclaim, earning Best Animated Short at the Kollywood International Film Festival in India and securing nominations from Scotland to Nashville. With voice performances by Gil Birmingham, Brenda Strong, Kevin Sizemore, and Ryan Merriman—alongside an original score by Tyler Michael Smith—the project stands as both a tribute and a testament to purposeful filmmaking.
Audiences can stream "Walk In The Light" on Vimeo OnDemand and download the soundtrack—featuring award-winning guitarist Michael Rix—on Apple Music and Spotify. More information is available at:
