THREE KINGS DAY ... Details Inside



El Museo del Barrio's 48th Annual Three Kings Day Parade and Celebration!



This year’s theme, ¡Pa’lante, Siempre Pa’lante! (“Forward, Always Forward!”), is inspired by the legacy of the Young Lords and the enduring traditions of cultural resistance and mutual care in East Harlem.



The vibrant procession will begin at 106th Street and Park Avenue, ending at 115th Street and Park Avenue, and will feature lively music, colorful floats, majestic camels, and the joyful participation of thousands of schoolchildren and community members.







Total Equity Now is proud to be represented on the Steering Committee for this amazing celebration of culture, community, activism, and arts education.


EVENT SCHEDULE


8:30 AM – 10:30 AM | Kick-off Breakfast in El Café at El Museo del Barrio

Kick-off breakfast with Honorary Kings, Madrinas and Padrinos, and Elected Officials.

  • 8:30 AM – Doors Open
  • 9:00 AM – Program starts



11:00 AM – 12:00 PM | The Parade

Parade begins at 106th Street and Park Avenue and goes east towards Third Avenue.

Marchers make a left on Third Avenue until 116th Street, ending at 115th Street and Park Avenue. Check-in for groups begins at 10 AM on 106th Street. Come celebrate from start to finish—spectators welcome all along the route.

CHAMPIONS OF LITERACY AND LITERATURE



As an organization on a mission to celebrate and advance literacy and literature, Total Equity Now is thrilled about the Three Kings Day Parade's literary connections, including its homage to the ancestors--writers and literacy/literary activists who have shaped Harlem and/or the world.



  • Anacaona, Taíno chief, poet, and composer
  • Jack Agüeros, Puerto Rican poet, writer, and activist, and the former director of El Museo
  • Pura Belpré, Puerto Rican children's librarian (the first Puerto Rican hired by the New York Public Library), author, and puppeteer (see also TEN's Books About Harlem lists for children and adults)
  • Julia de Burgos, Puerto Rican poet, journalist, activist, and teacher
  • Miguel Cervantes, the Spanish author of Don Quijote
  • Antonia Pantoja, Puerto Rican leader and author of Memoir of a Visionary: Antonia Pantoja
  • Pedro Pietri, Puerto Rican poet and co-founder of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe
  • Arturo Schomburg, Puerto Rican historian, writer, curator, and activist who documented and preserved Black history and culture (see also TEN's Books About Harlem list for children)
  • Piri Thomas, author of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent who wrote Down These Mean Streets (see also TEN's Books About Harlem list for teens and young adults)
  • Rafael Tufiño, Puerto Rican painter and printmaker whose work included paintings, posters and advertisements promoting literacy and health



This year's honorees include distinguished writers, poets, and other leaders whose work carries on those powerful literary traditions.


  • Vagabond Alexander Beaumont, writer, actor, director, producer
  • Wallace "Wally" Edgecombe, Founding Executive Director (Retired) of the Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture, which hosted the annual National Puerto Rican Artisans and Authors Fair
  • Johanna Fernándezauthor of The Young Lords: A Radical History; Associate Professor of History, Baruch College and CUNY Graduate Center
  • Tony Martinez, Founder & Owner of BarrioBX restaurant, which hosts community book clubs
  • Jesus "Papoleto" Mendez, poet, performer, and Three Kings Day Parade king emeritus
