BAM is opening its doors to a very millennial prince of Denmark.
This April, the Brooklyn Academy of Music launches a new multi-year partnership with London’s National Theatre by importing Robert Hastie’s “witty, fearlessly contemporary” Hamlet to the Harvey Theater for a four-week run, April 19–May 17, with opening night set for May 4. The US premiere stars Olivier Award–winner Hiran Abeysekera (Life of Pi) in the title role, leading a West End–heavy ensemble that includes Ayesha Dharker as Gertrude, Francesca Mills as Ophelia, Alistair Petrie as Claudius, and Tessa Wong as Horatio.
BAM’s artistic director is billing the production as a “kinetic, next-gen” Hamlet, designed to speak directly to now. The collaboration goes beyond a single import: future National Theatre productions will transfer to BAM’s stages, National Theatre Live screenings will land at BAM Rose Cinemas, and Brooklyn public school students will build their own Shakespeare-inspired work through BAM’s (Re)Centering Theater program, culminating in performances at BAM. A free exhibition and digital collection will trace Hamlet’s legacy across both institutions.
Tickets start at $35 for HAMLET are available now at BAM.org/Hamlet.
