BIGFOOT!,” a new Off-Broadway musical comedy, begins previews tonight at New York City Center Stage I, where Grey Henson — a Tony Award nominee for “Mean Girls” — dons fur and feelings as an eight-foot-tall misfit learning to survive small-town hysteria. Written by Amber Ruffin, David A. Schmoll, and Kevin Sciretta and directed and choreographed by Danny Mefford, the show opens March 1 and has already extended its run through April 26, a rare vote of confidence for a new musical still in previews.
Set in Muddirt, a glow-in-the-dark outpost wedged between a chemical dump and a nuclear plant, “BIGFOOT!” uses a monster movie premise to lampoon corrupt politicians, media panic, and the ease with which communities turn on those who look different. Its hero is less cryptid than a teenager: shy, gentle, badly in need of electrolysis, and suddenly the focus of a “can’t-miss, can’t-myth” crusade.
Henson is joined by Crystal Lucas-Perry, Katerina McCrimmon, Alex Moffat, Jason Tam, and Jade Jones. The production, led by Benson Drive Productions in association with Manhattan Theatre Club, leans into its comic-book world with a design team spanning sets, wigs, sound, and a glow-stick palette.
For those curious about this particular urban legend, a digital rush offers $39 same-day tickets via TodayTix, making the latest entry in the city’s monster canon surprisingly easy to spot.
