Table tennis champion Yasiris Ortiz serves up Bronx greatness in Oscar‑nominated ‘Marty Supreme’
Marty Supreme.
We recently spent the day with Dominican-born, Bronx-based table tennis player Yasiris Ortiz, who appears in the 2026 Oscar‑nominated film, “Marty Supreme,” starring Timothée Chalamet. Readers can go to PingPod to learn about her journey, experiences on‑screen and behind the scenes, and the nonprofit organization.
Proud and passionate about her table tennis career, Yasiris now channels that momentum into mentoring the next generation of Bronx players through her nonprofit Spin and Learn, where she coaches young athletes at schools in New York City, and her new book, “Yasi the Champion: A Table Tennis Tale,” a children’s story about a Latina girl dreaming of becoming a champion.
Our session with Yasi Ortiz can be seen in a video by Davi Estrada @daviestrada_is an LA‑based filmmaker and media artist who is experienced in short‑form documentary and experimental narrative content in both English and Spanish, with a passion for highlighting underrepresented cultures and voices.
His recent work includes stories centered on individuals from Latin‑American and Indigenous American diasporas.
“Marty Supreme” enters the 98th Academy Awards as a nine-time nominee, after collecting roughly two dozen prizes and more than 100 nominations from critics’ organizations, guilds, and major awards bodies, including Golden Globe and Critics Choice wins for Chalamet.
The film will compete when the Oscars are held on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at 7 p.m. ET at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, in categories such as “Best Picture,” “Best Director,” “Best Actor,” and “Best Casting.”
