Conan O’Brien Returns to Host the 99th Oscars as Academy Bets on Stability in a Changing Entertainment Industry
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is sticking with a formula that has helped steady and modernize the Oscars during a difficult era for live television.
Conan O’Brien will officially return to host the 99th Academy Awards in 2027, marking his third consecutive time leading Hollywood’s most-watched celebration of film. Executive producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan are also returning for a fourth consecutive year, continuing a creative partnership that has quietly reshaped the tone and pace of the modern Oscars telecast. Producers Jeff Ross and Mike Sweeney will return as well, with Sweeney once again serving as a writer for the show.
The 99th Oscars are scheduled to air live on March 14, 2027, from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on ABC and Hulu.
For years, the Academy struggled to find consistency with its broadcast. Hosts came and went. Ratings fluctuated. Critics questioned whether the Oscars still held the same cultural power they once commanded in an entertainment landscape dominated by streaming, short-form content, and social media reaction clips.
But over the last several ceremonies, the Academy appears to have found something that works: stability. O’Brien’s return signals more than another hosting gig. It represents the Academy doubling down on a personality who understands both old Hollywood and internet-era comedy. Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor praised the returning team, saying the group has delivered “captivating, entertaining and heartfelt shows” over the last two years while honoring the global film community.
Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich pointed directly to O’Brien’s impact on the telecast’s energy, crediting his comedic voice with helping transform Hollywood’s biggest night into one of television’s most entertaining live events again. That balance matters.
The Oscars are no longer just competing with other award shows. They are competing with TikTok, YouTube creators, gaming livestreams, prestige television, podcasts, and endless second-screen distractions. Every year, producers face the same challenge: how do you create an event people feel they must watch live?
The Academy believes O’Brien is part of that answer.
Long before becoming one of television’s most recognizable late-night hosts, O’Brien built his reputation as a comedy writer on “Saturday Night Live” and “The Simpsons,” where he helped shape some of the most beloved episodes in television history.
His later hosting career stretched across “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien,” and eventually “Conan,” where his self-aware humor and ability to lean into awkwardness became part of his brand. Unlike many award show hosts who come from stand-up or film, O’Brien’s strength has always been unpredictability. He can pivot from absurd comedy bits to sincere moments without making either feel forced. That flexibility has become increasingly valuable for a ceremony trying to honor cinema while still functioning as mass entertainment.
Behind the scenes, Kapoor and Mullan have become two of the most influential producers working in live television today.
Kapoor has earned multiple Emmy nominations and won for his work on the 96th Oscars, while also producing major events including the Grammys, ACM Awards, Latin Grammys, the Emmy Awards, and Olympic-related broadcasts.
Mullan, a partner in the global production company Done + Dusted, has worked on productions ranging from the London Olympics ceremonies to “The Little Mermaid Live!” and Disney television specials.
Together, the producing team has helped move the Oscars away from feeling overly formal toward something more fluid and modern—while still protecting the prestige the Academy wants to preserve. Ross and Sweeney also bring decades of chemistry with O’Brien. Their history stretches back through his late-night years, helping create the comedic rhythm audiences now associate with his style.
The announcement also arrives during a broader transition period for the film industry. Theatrical exhibition continues to recover from pandemic-era disruptions. Studios are still recalibrating streaming strategies. Independent filmmakers face growing financial pressure. At the same time, international cinema has become increasingly important to Oscar voters, helping broaden the Academy’s global reach.
The Oscars themselves have evolved alongside those shifts. Recent ceremonies have embraced wider international representation, younger audiences, and digital engagement in ways the Academy once resisted.
Still, the pressure surrounding the show remains enormous. Every host is dissected in real time online. Every acceptance speech becomes instant commentary. Every ratings report sparks another debate about whether award shows still matter in modern culture.
Yet despite those conversations, the Oscars remain one of the few entertainment events capable of commanding worldwide attention across generations.
That reality makes consistency valuable. By reuniting O’Brien with Kapoor, Mullan, Ross, and Sweeney, the Academy is signaling that it is less interested in reinvention and more focused on refinement.
