‘The Fear of 13’ to host Broadway benefit performance supporting the Innocence Project
A special one-night benefit performance of “The Fear of 13” will take place on May 14, 2026, at the James Earl Jones Theatre on Broadway, and will benefit the Innocence Project.
Produced by Seaview, Wessex Grove, and Gavin Kalin Productions, the event will donate $10 from every ticket sold to the Innocence Project to support its ongoing work in fighting wrongful convictions.
The benefit performance will include a post-show moderated talkback featuring Innocence Project Executive Director Christina Swarns, playwright Lindsey Ferrentino, actors Adrien Brody and Tessa Thompson, and Innocence Project client and exoneree Termaine Hicks, who was released in 2020 after serving 19 years in prison for a wrongful conviction. Swarns also served as one of the attorneys on Nick Yarris’s case, which is the basis of the production.
Swarns said in a statement that the partnership highlights “how hard it is to free and exonerate an innocent person,” while bringing attention to the broader issue of wrongful convictions and the Innocence Project’s efforts to prevent them.
The producers of “The Fear of 13” called the collaboration the Innocence Project’s first partnership with a Broadway production and said that storytelling can play a meaningful role in driving social change.
“The Fear of 13” stars two-time Academy Award winner Brody and Golden Globe nominee Thompson, both making their Broadway debuts. The production is directed by Tony Award-winner David Cromer.
The cast also includes Ephraim Sykes, Michael Cavinder, Eddie Cooper, Victor Cruz, Eboni Flowers, Joel Marsh Garland, Jared Wayne Gladly, Joe Joseph, Jeb Kreager, and Ben Thompson.
Based on the true story of Yarris, “The Fear of 13” follows a man who spends more than two decades on death row for a murder he insists he did not commit. Through conversations with a prison volunteer named Jacki, the play examines justice, truth, freedom, and the emotional cost of survival.
The production had its world premiere at the Donmar Warehouse, with the original staging directed by Justin Martin.
The creative team includes Arnulfo Maldonado (scenic design), Sarah Laux (costume design), Heather Gilbert (lighting design), Lee Kinney (sound design), Rob Pickens and Katie Gell (hair, wig, and makeup design), Bryan Carter (music supervisor and arranger), Gigi Buffington (voice and dialect coach), Rocio Mendez and Dave Anzuelo (fight and intimacy direction), Neal Gupta (associate director), and Yarris as story consultant.
Tickets are available through The Fear of 13 Broadway, Telecharge, by phone at 212-239-6200, or at the James Earl Jones Theatre box office.
