Liberation Wins Best Play at 2026 Tony Awards

Liberation Wins Best Play at 2026 Tony Awards

Liberation won the Tony Award for Best Play at the 79th Annual Tony Awards, marking a historic moment for playwright Bess Wohl as she becomes the first American woman to win the award since Wendy Wasserstein's The Heidi Chronicles in 1989.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning play won 5 Tony Award nominations, including Best Play, Best Direction of a Play for Whitney White, Best Actress in a Leading Role for Susannah Flood, Best Featured Actress for Betsy Aidem, and Best Costume Design for Qween Jean.

What Liberation Is About

Liberation is a '70s memory play that explores feminist politics, family dynamics, and what it means to claim power. The story follows Lizzie's daughter, who steps into her mother's memory—into the unfinished revolution she once helped ignite—and searches the past to find answers for herself.

Bess Wohl presents a "refreshingly irreverent and intensely relevant powerhouse of a play about what we inherit, what we forget, and what we're still fighting to understand". The play captivated audiences with its wit, heart, and striking originality, quickly becoming one of the most celebrated works of the season.

The Production

Directed by Tony Award nominee Whitney White, the play starred Susannah Flood as Lizzie, who earned her first Tony nomination for her role in the complex work exploring women and their daughters, friends, and husbands. The production ended its limited Broadway run in February 2026.

The win is particularly significant as it's been 17 years since a female playwright won the Tony for Best Play (Yasmina Reza's God of Carnage in 2009) and 37 years since an American woman won it.

Liberation won Best Play over The Balusters, Giant, and Little Bear Ridge Road.
