The first list, timed to the Academy’s 100th anniversary in 2027, will recognize 25 theaters in the United States and 25 international theaters.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is creating a new global honor for movie theaters, a move that places the theatrical experience at the center of its upcoming centennial celebration.
The organization announced Monday that it will launch the Academy Marquee Theater List, a new program designed to recognize notable movie theaters around the world and celebrate excellence in exhibition. The list will honor theaters that provide exceptional audience experiences, preserve cinematic history, and serve as cultural anchors in their communities.
The first list will be unveiled in the spring of 2027, as the Academy celebrates its 100th anniversary. It will include 50 theaters: 25 in the United States and 25 outside the country.
A committee of Academy members from across all branches will select the theaters, with final approval from the Academy’s Board of Governors.
“We are thrilled to launch the Academy Marquee Theater List, which will celebrate moviegoing and honor theaters that bring communities together through the power of cinematic storytelling,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor said in a joint statement.
They said the program will recognize a broad range of exhibition spaces, “from classic movie palaces to multiplexes to independent cinemas,” and credited Academy Governor Jason Reitman with bringing forward the idea for the initiative.
The program arrives at a moment when the film industry continues to debate the future of moviegoing, the role of streaming, and the survival of theatrical exhibition. By creating a formal list of distinguished theaters, the Academy is placing renewed institutional weight behind cinemas not simply as screening rooms, but as cultural gathering places.
Eligible theaters must be brick-and-mortar locations that operate year-round. They may be located anywhere in the world and may present either first-run films or repertory programming. A maximum of 10 theaters operated by the same theater chain or owner may be submitted in a single submission cycle.
The Academy said theaters will be evaluated across several categories, including community engagement, visual and audio presentation, programming, diversity, inclusion and accessibility, historic significance and preservation, theater design, lighting and conditions, and concessions.
Selected theaters will be featured on the Academy’s digital platforms, including its website and social media channels. Each theater chosen for the list will also receive a physical certification to display in its lobby.
Applications are open now, with a deadline of Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026, at 5 p.m. PT. The application fee is tiered by submission date: $250 for early submissions from June 1 through June 30; $350 for regular submissions from July 1 through July 3; and $450 for late submissions from Aug. 1 through Aug. 25.
The Academy, best known for presenting the Oscars, has a global membership of more than 11,000 film artists and industry leaders. Its affiliated Academy Foundation supports educational, preservation, and cultural programs, including the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, the Academy Collection, and talent development programs for emerging artists.
