The Public Theater Sets Cast for Free Shakespeare in the Park’s 'The Winter’s Tale'

The Public Theater Sets Cast for Free Shakespeare in the Park’s The Winter’s Tale

Saturday, July 25 - Saturday, August 22.

The Public Theater has announced the full cast for its Free Shakespeare in the Park production of The Winter’s Tale, bringing one of Shakespeare’s strangest and most emotionally elastic late romances back to the Delacorte Theater in Central Park this summer.

Directed by Daniel Sullivan, with choreography by Mimi Lieber, the production begins performances on Saturday, July 25, and runs through Saturday, August 22. The official press opening is Tuesday, August 11. Performances are scheduled Tuesday through Sunday at 8 p.m.

Sullivan, a Tony Award-winning director and longtime Shakespeare in the Park regular, returns to the Delacorte for his 12th Free Shakespeare in the Park production. The Winter’s Tale has been staged at the Delacorte four times before, most recently in 2010.

“I’m thrilled to be back at The Delacorte, with old friends and new, putting together The Winter’s Tale,” Sullivan said in a statement. “It’s one of Shakespeare’s most fascinating and moving creations.”

The cast includes Raúl Esparza as Leontes, Lily Rabe as Hermione, Isabela Ferrer as Perdita, Daniel Kyri as Florizel, Gilbert Owuor as Polixenes, Teagle F. Bougere as Camillo, Chuck Cooper as Old Shepherd, Steven Skybell as Antigonus and Autolycus, Michael Khalid Karadsheh as Young Shepherd, Matthew Eby as Mamillius, Time and Ensemble, Katie Griffith as Mopsa and Ensemble, and Alex Hernandez as Cleomenes and Ensemble.

The full company also includes Heschel Bay, Peter Douskalis, Denise Kolodja, Aubie Merrylees, Jennifer Mogbock, Violeta Picayo, Bianca Rogoff, Matthew Russell, Michael Thanh Tran, and Jackson Whitman.

The story begins in Sicilia, where King Leontes becomes convinced that his pregnant wife, Hermione, has been unfaithful. Their infant daughter is smuggled away to Bohemia, where she is raised as Perdita by an old shepherd. Sixteen years later, Perdita falls in love with a young man who is not quite what he seems, setting the play on its winding road through jealousy, grief, forgiveness, disguise and improbable grace.

The production reunites Sullivan with Lieber, who serves as choreographer and associate director. “This will be the sixth show I’ve choreographed for Dan at The Delacorte, and we always have a great time doing it,” Lieber said, adding that the combination of longtime collaborators and Shakespeare’s language would put her “in heaven.”

The creative team includes Maruti Evans for scenic design, Linda Cho for costumes, Brian Ronan for sound design, Tom Kitt for composition, Tom Watson for hair and wigs, Mike Tracey for sound system design, James Ortiz for puppets, and Rachel Kenner for prop management. Caroline Englander is the production stage manager, with Jessie Moore and Luisa Sánchez Colón as stage managers.

Free Shakespeare in the Park, conceived by Public Theater founder Joseph Papp to make theater accessible to all, has reached more than six million people since its inception. The Delacorte, which first opened in 1962, reopened in summer 2025 after a major revitalization that included accessibility improvements and a new wood façade made from salvaged New York City water towers.

Free tickets will be distributed in several ways: same-day in person at the Delacorte Theater; at borough distribution sites, including 23 dates at Citizens branches; through an in-person lottery at The Public Theater at 425 Lafayette Street; and through a digital lottery on the TodayTix app. A limited number of tickets are also available through advance reservation with a contribution supporting Free Shakespeare in the Park.

The Audio Described performance is Saturday, August 15. The English Open Captioned performance is on Wednesday, August 19. The Spanish Open Captioned performance is Thursday, August 20. The American Sign Language Interpreted performances are on Friday, August 21.

The Delacorte Theater is accessible through Central Park at 81st Street and Central Park West or at 79th Street and Fifth Avenue
