‘Hadestown: The Musical’ Breaks Live Theater Box Office Record and Extends Theatrical Run

The filmed production earned $10.2 million during its opening weekend, surpassing “Hamilton” and prompting additional screenings across North America.

Hadestown: The Musical has set a new North American box office record for a live theater capture, earning $10.2 million from 1,949 theaters during its opening weekend.

Released by Bleecker Street’s event-cinema division Crosswalk in collaboration with LD Entertainment, the filmed stage musical surpassed Hamilton to claim the biggest opening weekend ever for a live theater capture.

The release was initially projected to earn $9.69 million, but strong word of mouth, repeat viewings, and higher-than-expected Sunday ticket sales pushed the final total above $10 million.

Originally planned as a five-day theatrical event, Hadestown: The Musical has now been extended due to audience demand, with participating theaters adding dates and showtimes.

Filmed in London and directed for the screen by Brett Sullivan of Steam Motion and Sound, the production reunites the five original principal performers from the Broadway company:

Reeve Carney as Orpheus, Eva Noblezada as Eurydice, André De Shields in his Tony Award-winning role as Hermes, Amber Gray as Persephone and Patrick Page as Hades.

Written by Anaïs Mitchell and originally directed for the stage by Rachel Chavkin, Hadestown won eight Tony Awards in 2019, including Best Musical. It also received the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.

The musical reimagines the intertwined myths of Orpheus and Eurydice and Hades and Persephone through a score blending American folk music, blues and New Orleans-inspired jazz.

What began as Mitchell’s independent theater project in Vermont later became an acclaimed concept album before being developed with Chavkin into an international theatrical production.

The musical is currently in its seventh year at Broadway’s Walter Kerr Theatre and its third year in London’s West End. Productions have also played in South Korea, Sydney, Melbourne and Amsterdam.

The film also features Bella Brown, Madeline Charlemagne and Allie Daniel as the Fates, along with Lauren Azania, Tiago Dhondt Bamberger, Ryesha Higgs, Waylon Jacobs and Christopher Short as the Workers.

Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold and Tom Kirdahy produced the film and stage production. LD Entertainment is also a co-producer of the Broadway and West End productions.

Hadestown: The Musical is the first in a planned series of Broadway live captures from Crosswalk and LD Entertainment.
