Jurnee Smollett to Replace Kerry Washington in
‘The Whoopi Monologues’
Off Broadway
The “Lovecraft Country” actress will join Lincoln Center Theater’s reimagining of Whoopi Goldberg’s landmark solo show beginning Aug. 4.
Jurnee Smollett will join the cast of The Whoopi Monologues at Lincoln Center Theater on Aug. 4, succeeding Kerry Washington, who is scheduled to give her final performance on Aug. 2.
Written by Whoopi Goldberg and directed by the Tony Award nominee Whitney White, the Off-Broadway production opened July 13 at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater. Goldberg’s original one-woman show, first presented in New York in 1984, has been reconceived for an ensemble of five actresses portraying her sharply observed characters.
Smollett will join Dominique Fishback, the Tony Award winner Kecia Lewis, Danielle Pinnock and the two-time Tony winner Kara Young. Kai Heath, Denise Manning and Pavar Snipe serve as understudies. The limited engagement is scheduled to continue through Aug. 30.
Known for her Emmy-nominated performance in HBO’s Lovecraft Country and her recent role in the Apple TV+ crime drama Smoke, Smollett previously appeared onstage in Horton Foote’s The Trip to Bountiful opposite Cicely Tyson and Vanessa Williams.
The Whoopi Monologues is produced in partnership with Whoop, Inc./Tom Leonardis and Washington’s Simpson Street. Tickets are currently on sale through Lincoln Center Theater.
