'A Different World’ Returns to Hillman College With Maleah Joi Moon, Debbie Allen and Original Cast Favorites
A new generation heads to Hillman College when A Different World returns September 24, 2026, led by Maleah Joi Moon as Whitley and Dwayne Wayne’s youngest daughter.
A Different World is heading back to Hillman College.
The new 10-episode, half-hour series premieres September 24, 2026, introducing a new class of students while bringing back beloved characters from the original series.
At the center is Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), the sheltered, free-spirited youngest daughter of Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne, who arrives at Hillman still figuring out who she wants to become.
Joining her are Alijah Kai as first-generation criminal justice major Rashida Duvall; Cornell Young IV as five-star athlete Shaquille Johnson; Jordan Aaron Hall as psychology major Amir Rodale; Kennedi Reece as church-raised Hazel Henry; and Chibuikem Uche as Ghanaian-Nigerian fashion entrepreneur Kojo Achebe.
Original A Different World favorites also return, including Jasmine Guy as Whitley Gilbert, Kadeem Hardison as Dwayne Wayne, Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks and Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson.
Set within the traditions, humor and complexities of HBCU life, the new A Different World is described as a hopeful dramedy centered on the richness of the Black experience.
Felicia Pride serves as creator, showrunner, writer and executive producer. Debbie Allen executive produces and directs the premiere, with Tiffany Johnson, Angela Barnes, Nefertite Nguvu and Bille Woodruff also directing episodes.
Executive producers include Tom Werner, Debbie Allen, Felicia Pride, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Mandy Summers. Derryck “Big Tank” Thornton serves as music supervisor.
