‘Spring Awakening’
Returns Off-Broadway Nov. 27 With New Cast and Danya Taymor Directing
The Tony Award-winning musical by Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik begins performances at Studio Seaview, with an official opening set for Dec. 13.
The Tony Award-winning musical “Spring Awakening” is returning to the New York stage this fall, with performances beginning Friday, Nov. 27, 2026, at Studio Seaview. The Off-Broadway revival, directed by Tony Award winner Danya Taymor, will officially open Sunday, Dec. 13.
Featuring a book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik, “Spring Awakening” has remained one of contemporary musical theater's most provocative works, exploring adolescent desire, repression, and the often devastating consequences of silence between generations.
The new production, now in rehearsals, features choreography by Celia Rowlson-Hall and music supervision by Or Matias.
Leading the cast are Tyler Jordan Wesley as Melchior, Ashlyn Maddox as Wendla, and Ryo Kamibayashi as Moritz, the three young characters at the center of the musical's emotionally charged story.
The company also includes George Abud as the Adult Men, Lilli Cooper as the Adult Women, Jack Bateman as Georg, Jada Simone Clark as Thea, Leif Coomer as Ernst, Nando Morland as Otto, Antonio Porciello as Hanschen, Khadija Sankoh as Martha, Grace Slear as Anna and Amalia Yoo as Ilse.
Newly announced understudies and swings include Frenie Acoba, Christiana Clark, Lilly David, Erik Houck, Hennessy Winkler and Sam Yousuf.
The production's casting process attracted considerable interest. During an open casting call in July, 2,532 performers were seen, with David, Bateman and Porciello among those selected.
The revival brings together a notable creative team, including scenic designers Christine Jones and Brett Banakis, costume designer Kaye Voyce, lighting designer Brian MacDevitt, sound designer Cody Spencer and special effects designer Jeremy Chernick.
Cynthia Meng serves as music director and conductor, with David Lai as music coordinator. The creative team also includes intimacy coordinator Ann James, fight coordinator Drew Leary, creative consultant C.A. Johnson, associate director Miranda Cornell, and voice and text coach Gigi Buffington. Casting is by The TRC Company/Xavier Rubiano, CSA, and Peter Van Dam, CSA.
Elizabeth Allen serves as production stage manager, with Sean Gorski of Hudson Theatrical Associates overseeing production management and Jonathan Whitton of Seaview serving as general manager.
Originally adapted from Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 play, “Spring Awakening” earned eight Tony Awards for its original Broadway production, including Best Musical. Its combination of alternative rock and a story confronting sexual awakening, parental authority, and emotional isolation helped reshape expectations of what a Broadway musical could address.
Nearly two decades after its Broadway debut, the musical's questions about young people struggling to find their voices remain strikingly relevant.
“Spring Awakening” begins Off-Broadway performances Nov. 27 at Studio Seaview, with an official opening on Dec. 13, 2026.
