Othello, $49 Student Rush Announced

 Broadway’s Hottest Spring

 Ticket: Washington and

 Gyllenhaal Lead Explosive

 Revival of Othello, $49 Student

 Rush Announced

Shakespeare’s Othello has stormed back onto the Broadway stage in a gripping new production at the Barrymore Theatre, led by two Hollywood heavyweights—Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal—and directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon. Following a critically acclaimed opening night, producers have announced a $49 student rush policy, offering a rare chance for young theatergoers to witness what The Washington Post calls “Broadway’s hottest spring ticket.”

Beginning March 25, a limited number of student tickets will be available at each performance when the box office opens. Students must present a valid ID and are limited to one ticket per person. Seats may be partial view. The Barrymore Theatre (243 West 47th Street) box office opens at 10 AM Tuesday through Saturday and 12 PM on Sundays.

This Othello marks a major moment in Broadway history—not only for its high-wattage cast but for its bold reimagining of a classic tragedy. Washington, a two-time Academy Award and Tony Award winner, returns to Shakespeare with what The New York Times calls “a commanding and gripping” performance as the Moor of Venice. Opposite him, Gyllenhaal delivers “a dynamic, riveting, and turbocharged Iago,” according to The Chicago Tribune. Their onstage chemistry crackles as betrayal and jealousy unravel one of the Bard’s most harrowing tales.

Rounding out the cast are Molly Osborne as Desdemona, Tony Award winner Andrew Burnap as Cassio, Anthony Michael Lopez as Roderigo, Daniel Pearce as Brabantio, and Kimber Elayne Sprawl as Emilia, with an ensemble of Broadway veterans and rising stars.

Leon’s production marks a significant return to Shakespeare for Washington, who last appeared on Broadway in The Iceman Cometh (2018) and Fences (2010). It also reunites the actor with Leon, who directed him in A Raisin in the Sun, for which Washington received widespread acclaim. Gyllenhaal, known for his film work and recent Broadway turn in Sea Wall/A Life, brings psychological intensity and unexpected humor to Iago, a role often considered one of the most complex in Shakespeare’s canon.

This Othello continues a storied Broadway tradition. The tragedy first appeared on the Great White Way in 1751 and has since seen landmark performances—from Paul Robeson’s groundbreaking 1943 portrayal (the first by an African American in a major Broadway production) to James Earl Jones and Christopher Plummer’s iconic pairing in 1982. Each revival has reflected its moment, and this 2025 production stands as a timely meditation on power, race, and manipulation.

Behind the scenes, the production is stacked with an award-winning creative team. Scenic design is by Derek McLane, costumes by Dede Ayite, lighting by Natasha Katz, and sound by Justin Ellington. The team also includes Mia Neal (hair and wig design), Claire Warden (intimacy director), and Shakespeare scholar James Shapiro as a consultant, ensuring authenticity and nuance in every line delivered.

Othello is a strictly limited engagement and will run through Sunday, June 8. Tickets are available at www.telecharge.com, by phone at 212-239-6200, or in person at the Barrymore Theatre box office.

This spring, Broadway belongs to the Bard. And thanks to the student rush policy, the next generation of theater lovers will have front-row access to a revival that’s already cemented its place in Broadway history.
